Creating a Healthy Lifestyle

Cover Story

Weight Scale Running Shoesby Lynn Price

Someone once observed, “If you gain one pound a year after you’re married, by the time you’ve been married 50 years, you’ll have gained 50 pounds.”

When I married, my husband and I agreed that after the birth of each child, I had to regain my pre-pregnancy weight before I could get pregnant again. This plan worked well for my first four children. And then we moved to Germany.

Letter From The Editor

Daniby Danielle Ellis

As the third part of our series on Provident Living, this issue of Desert Saints Magazine focuses on Physical Health. Since our bodies are the means through which our spirits must work and live on this earth, their functionality is key. If we allow our health to break down, we are unable to learn, grow, serve and find joy in all the ways the Lord has promised to us.

10,000 Steps to Easy Parenting

Be Of Good Cheer

Magicianby Dave Ellis

I don’t know how they did it. My parents made raising us kids looks so easy. I feel it was a bit deceptive. We kids, or us kids, whatever, would be playing out back and then my mom would call us in for dinner and POOF it was ready. We’d come home from school and POOF Christmas decorations were up. We’d ask our parents to make some POOF and POOF the POOF was there!

Just the Facts: Science Supports the Word of Wisdom

Why are we counseled to eat “in the season thereof”?

It’s probably easier on the budget, but as we continue to learn about food, we are learning why, for instance, we should eat strawberries in the spring rather than in January. Strawberries ripen in the spring and they also happen to be a natural blood thinner and a perfect food to prepare the body for warmer weather.

Making Lasting Change

Ask The Counselor, General

By Steve Tracy, MA NAFP MFT

Question: We are a good family but need to help everyone get healthy. While we do everything we are supposed to I worry about the amount of sitting we do between home, school, TV, games, and the types of food we eat. We have tried in the past to eat and exercise regularly but it never seems to last. Do you have some suggestions for helping us make it work this time?

Sacred Parenting

General

Family Home Eveningby Shannon Miller

As a stay-at-home mom of two young children, the phrase “parenting is a sacred calling” isn’t always comforting. The never-ending dishes, vacuuming, and pulling apart fighting children seem anything but sacred. As I was feeling unsettled and unsure about my decision to stay at home, I turned to the scriptures. I found that studying the scriptures increased my desire to teach and be patient with my children.

Dr. Glick Gives Honest, Patient-Centered Care

Business Spotlight

glickMuch of the dentistry world has recently gone “high end,” with a goal to “sell” patients on as many services and products as possible, whether or not they are really needed.

Dr. Ben Glick, whose brand new office is located on Horizon Ridge Parkway near Gibson Road in Henderson, takes a different approach. Rather than telling patients they must get the most expensive procedure done to a damaged tooth, he explains all the options. “This is what you need, but this would be nice,” is a common approach for him. Giving patients options in their care according to time frame or cost develops a high level of trust.

Facing the Future

Simply Gail

Elderly Woman Lookingby Gail Jackson

For Dave’s March birthday in 1999, the gifts from our children and I included a subscription to a photography magazine, art supplies and accompanying how-to books, jigsaw puzzles, emergency flares and simple emergency automotive supplies.
Our family was giving him things to further his hobbies and give him material to pursue new interests. We were giving him things to help him through what we all thought would be his impending widower-hood, about two months down the road.

I had become very ill in December and continued to decline in spite of medical efforts to discover what was wrong.

Liken The Scriptures Releases New Title

Movie Review

Summer Naomi SmartLightstone Studios has just released the sixth title in its popular Liken the Scriptures series of DVDs.

Called “Esther and the King,” the live-action musical portrays the biblical story as seen from the imagination of a modern-day child. “Our hope with this series is that children will learn that they can apply scripture stories to the challenges they face today,” said Las Vegas resident Craig Brooksby, executive producer at Lightstone. “We’re delighted when we hear from parents who tell us that they were not only able to enjoy the movies with their children, but they were able to follow it up with meaningful gospel discussions.”

Cute Lamps

Clever Creations

Lampby Kara Sommer

I love a great fixer-upper project. I take a lot of pride in my “before and afters.” This time I decided to take a set of lamps that were plain, simple, and uninteresting (not to mention inexpensive) and dress them up a bit. I did this by spray painting them gold and then rubbing a gel stain over it to make them look antique. I updated the lamp shades by gluing lace to them. I also added a beaded by-the-yard trim to complete the look.

This project was easy and fun. Now the lamps don’t seem so plain, simple, or uninteresting anymore. (They are still inexpensive!) Dress up something in your home with a little paint and creativity. It goes a long way!
