Developing good study habits in high school is one of the best ways to get the most out of college classes. You will reap many benefits, in further education and in life.
Great study habits begin with careful reading of your textbook, preferably before the class discussion. You become familiar with the information for the first time and you can participate in the class discussion. This also helps you to remember and form opinions about the information. Take notes while reading or at least highlighting the important parts. This saves time when you are reviewing for tests.
Review classroom notes. If the professor says it during the lecture and it is in your book, it will probably be on the test. Also, topics the professor spends a lot of time on are often good topics for papers.
Establish a regular routine for your studying. Having a plan for your time and a goal for what you will accomplish during that time will result in better grades in the short term. In the long term, you improve your ability to learn information quickly, an important skill for any future job.
Once in college, there is little time to develop the necessary skills before the work accumulates. Learning effective study skills in high school prepares you for the challenges yet to come.
