At our house we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our fifth baby, due in November. As we make preparations, consider names and watch my ever-expanding middle, the excitement grows. It is a fun and happy time for our family.
But how well I remember one of my BYU professors, Dr. Doug Brinley, author of many books on relationships, telling of two different types of encounters he had with former students. One kind was when a happily married former student dropped by his office to relate excitedly that she was expecting a baby. The other kind was when a former student would come to his office, the weight of the world on her shoulders, and tell him that she was pregnant but not married.
The two situations were so close to each other, yet worlds apart in their implications for the present and the future.
So it is with many of the problems we are examining in this month’s Desert Saints Magazine. Some problems are thrust upon us without our doing anything. Some are from improper use of our agency. And some seem to be trials from heaven.
Whatever the cause, there is hope and help. First and foremost, there is help from heaven: strength, comfort, peace, forgiveness. Second, there is competent and qualified help all around: from counselors and doctors to 12 Step programs, church service missionaries and many more.
If you or someone know is struggling under the weight of social or emotional burdens, there is great counsel in this issue on how and where to turn for help. We have only touched the tip of the iceberg here, but there is also a wealth of information on the ProvidentLiving.org website on how to deal with and overcome the problems you face.
You are not alone, and the Lord always keeps His promises to comfort those who seek Him.
All the best,
