New Looks for Receptions

On a wedding day, the ceremony is a sacred, special time. But the reception is all fun and celebration! The latest trends in receptions and decorating are more personalized to the couple, whether that means a Tuscan-themed location reception, a ring ceremony before the reception, or just transforming the cultural hall into an elegant reception site.
Diane Bulloch, a Las Vegas-based reception caterer and decorator, enlightened us on what is happening in receptions and what’s coming:

Colors

Natural colors are big this year, such as wheat, chocolate, brown and cream. A popular combination is several shades of green, all used together, or cream, peach and a dark pink together. The hottest color this year is a new one, called punch. It’s an orangey pink, not fuchsia and not orange.

Decorations

About ninety percent of LDS wedding receptions are still in the cultural hall, so transforming that into something special is a big deal. Dropped ceilings are big, and while expensive, they look fantastic. More color is going on the tables, with colored tablecloths instead of white, and centerpieces that are tall and simple rather than smaller with more going on. Hurricane vases up to thirty inches tall with a few floating flowers are a great new look, as are battery-operated candles in the centerpieces.

Foods

The standby reception foods such as cheese and crackers, meatballs, etc. are still popular because people like them and they are not too expensive. But for those who want to do something different without blowing the budget, dessert buffets are hot, with pies and fancy desserts. As always, the better the serving tables look, the better the food will taste, so serving trays on risers and taller trays are big.

Times

Reception times are getting earlier, often 5-8 p.m. Ring ceremonies are becoming extremely popular, as they allow those who are not able to attend the temple ceremony to still feel like they are a part of the wedding. Many couples do a ring ceremony, then the reception line, then have a deejay take over who can really lead the party for the rest of the evening.

Themes

Themes are big in receptions. They can be as diverse as an ocean theme with shells and beta fish in fish bowls for centerpieces or a Tuscan flair. Location receptions are more popular in Southern Utah where there are many beautiful settings that won’t blow the entire budget, but there are some options in Las Vegas as well.
