Book Review: Finding Happiness Following the Death of a Child

Book Review

Joy Cometh In the Morning 3When someone loses a child to death—no matter the circumstances—heartbreak and devastation follow. No one can understand the grief that can envelop a parent save those who have had the unfortunate experience themselves. In the new book Joy Cometh in the Morning: A Story of Healing from the Loss of a Child (Deseret Book, Hardcover, $15.95), author Fran C. Hafen retells her own tender story and explores the journey from a mother’s broken heart to a healed heart.

As Hafen describes her own experience of losing her son she artfully describes the stages of grief—such as shock and anger—that are understandable to those who have lost a child.
The beauty of the book is then demonstrated in the healing process that ensues.

Hafen is open in sharing her innermost feelings during her grieving process, including her questioning of the Lord. No matter what, however, her testimony in the Lord’s plan was firm, and the journey she discovers as she learns to heal from the loss of her son is revealing and rewarding. Using scriptures and words from the prophets, Hafen testifies that pain and memories can become sweet through the Savior’s Atonement, and that all can find joy in our mortal journey.

Those who want to understand a parent’s grieving heart will find insight and help in the pages of Joy Cometh in the Morning. Family and friends who are at a loss as to what to say or do after someone close to them loses a child will feel comfortable sharing Hafen’s words with grieving parents. And any who open the pages of the book will find a testimony in the plan of salvation, the meaning of life, and in the Father’s plan for each of His children.
