I have five kids; four girls and one poor nitpicked boy, but he deserves it. When we bought our current house we only had three little kids, two girls and the boy. It seemed like we had too much space; cabinets were empty, we put both cars in the garage and we had a bedroom for each child. Then another girl was born, then another. I just calculated the bathroom to girl ratio as being 1/4 and realized I need to change it.

As I write this letter, my kids are off on an adventure with one of their grandmas. She took the four oldest and planned to be gone for five hours. Rumor was they were going to make cookies and then go see a movie. Brave soul, that grandma! Yesterday, they got to have an adventure with their other grandma. They went to the park with a picnic lunch and popcorn for the ducks. That trip ended early for reasons that shall remain nameless. But they certainly created plenty of fun memories!

It’s as simple as cause and effect. If I do something a result follows. If I lie, there will be guilt; if I eat too many cookies, I gain weight; if I read my scriptures and say my prayers, I feel good. And I’m sure that if we were sitting together we could come up with nearly unlimited examples of choice and consequence combinations.

Humility is a very important attribute if you want to learn and feel the spirit. We had two investigators recently that know the Bible really well. They aren’t active in their church but have a great knowledge of the gospel. When we taught them, they would talk forever and try to teach us. Neither of them got an answer from the Holy Ghost. Neither will be baptized.

Although as members of the Church of Jesus Christ we are all doing our level best to be good people, we still need reminders that everyone we meet is fighting a hard battle and could use a kind word. I remember a church talk a few years ago, which commented that in today’s world new members of the church may be “increasingly battered and scarred by sin.”

The Relief Society Sisters of the Lone Mountain Stake recently held a humanitarian day and tied fifty-three quilts. Nancy’s Quilt Shop donated the pieced quilt tops, backs and batting. The finished quilts were given to a local community service group which distributes items where they are needed. Twelve of the quilts went to one family who lost everything in a fire.
