The Mormon Battalion never fought in battle, but some consider the National Guard 222nd of Cedar City, or the “Triple Deuce” as they are often referred to, one of their military descendants. Since its inception, the unit has fought in seven wars from the Mexican War through the Iraq War, including the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. As far as they know, in spite of the numerous dangerous missions the soldiers have encountered, the 222nd has never lost a soldier in battle.

I looked up from my lunch at a café the other day to watch a guy outside the window struggling to stuff a twenty pound iguana into a duffel bag. My first thought was “how is it we can put a man on the moon but we can’t make a duffel bag that fits a twenty pound iguana?” My second thought was “why do weird things happen around me?”

At the age of twenty-seven, Scott Batt, an iron worker from Cedar City, husband and father of two, was called to war. Military service was not something he had planned on, and being almost ten years older than the average soldier, he’d thought he’d avoid the draft. However, when called to serve his country, he stepped up with sixteen million other men and women to defend his country and just maybe save the world.
