I Just Brushed My Teeth And I’m Stuffed

Be Of Good Cheer

Tooth with toothbrushBy Dave Ellis

Most people have strong olfactory connections with the past. In non-scientific terms, smells make us remember. I know I think of mom’s cooking whenever I smell onions sautéing, or camping when I smell burning wood. I think of hotdogs when I smell bologna, because technically they are made out of the same materials. One is just flattened. Kind of like the difference between a hairball and a toupee.

Serving For Life

General

Wonder Smile 1107By Heather B. Moore

Do you feel like you’ve served in your calling forever? Do you say to yourself, “She has a new calling, what about me?” Some callings are more difficult than others. Your challenge might be nursery, my challenge might be teaching the 12-14 year old Sunday School class.

Why Should I Serve?

General

Elder Garvin 1107By Daniel Garvin

When I was preparing for a mission, I knew that every worthy young man was supposed to serve, but I had not had a personal confirmation of that. I prayed and prayed to ask the Lord if I should serve, but got no answer. I didn’t want to go on a mission. But the thought of NOT serving a mission haunted me even more. I knew that my life would never be what the Lord wanted it to be if I didn’t serve Him. But why should I serve?

Why We Serve

General

Warm Springs2By Charlene Lindquist

When my husband and I were called to serve a mission at Warm Springs LDS Recreation Facility I knew my long awaited wish to serve a mission was granted. Our mission call came in the fall and it seemed perfect for both of us. We both love being in the outdoors and working with people. We love the Gospel of Jesus Christ and accepted the call. We reported on Thanksgiving Day.

Ancestors Stayed Put

It's All Relatives

Genealogist 1107By LaRae Free Kerr

American citizens move all over the country as well as to other countries. My family certainly moves around – from state to state – and to isles of the sea. My ancestors all moved around too. So imagine my surprise, even shock, when I discovered from a U.S. 2005 census Bureau American Community Survey, that most Americans reside in the state where they were born (AARP Bulletin Sep 2007 p 29).

Hymn Book Challenge

General

sheet music AI8By Lu Ann Brobst Staheli

I was excited about my new calling as Relief Society chorister and wanted to use the opportunity to learn the hymns. I also wanted to teach the sisters about music, authors, and the history of these sacred songs. I had noticed that my ward in Spanish Fork, Utah, did not often sing hymns that had been my favorites in Bloomington, Indiana. I remembered that even in Bloomington, we had a core of songs we usually sang which were different from those used in other Indiana wards or branches where I had been a member. I knew that all hymns had been carefully selected for inclusion in the church canon, and I wondered why we didn’t sing more of them.
