The New Year is here, and with it, the call to reform. I’m talking about New Year’s Resolutions. I have never made many resolutions. I was under the mistaken notion that since I went to church every week, fulfilled my calling, read my scriptures, and honored the Sabbath, I was doing all Heavenly Father required of me.

Years ago I wrote a Davey Award-winning article regarding the huge amount of food storage wheat my parents hauled around as we moved from state to state. What is a Davey Award? Oh, I made that up to reward myself for doing an article each month. It’s like a Peabody Award but made of ice cream.

Recently, members throughout Southern Nevada were asked to join together in faith and participate in a special fast to “temper the elements that He might provide snow in the mountains and rain in the desert valleys, that the drought might be moderated and the reservoirs filled.” (from Presidents Bingham and Robison memo to stake presidents)

I’m a runner. I can claim that title now since I’ve been running three times a week for over a year and have run in three 5k’s. This came about because I’m the Relief Society President in my ward, and last year my Enrichment Counselor came to me with the idea of training for a 5k as a Relief Society. You should know that I have never been athletic in any way. In fact the only reason I passed PE in school was because I showed up, dressed out and attempted to keep up! All these years I lacked coordination and endurance.

Church: The word alone can scare any young mother with small children. It may bring to my mind visions of temper tantrums, cheerios thrown into Sister Young’s hair, and “I have to go potty,” screamed at the wrong moment. Yet, those of us who want our children to be honest, upright citizens usually make the pilgrimage to church once a week.

Many people are surprised when they find out that Mitt Romney is not the first Mormon to run for president of the United States. That distinction belonged to Joseph Smith, the founder of the faith. He decided to run for president after the Church pleaded in vain for the government to compensate the Latter-day Saints for the property lost and afflictions suffered when they were expelled from the state of Missouri as a result of the extermination order in 1838.
