Letter From The Editor

As the United States enters a period that I can only euphemistically call “interesting,” the timeless counsel of Church leaders rings in my ears. We have been counseled for decades to put our lives in order; put our homes in order; draw near to one another; draw near to the Lord. We have been warned that these days would come. And now they are truly “at our doors.”

I pray that your family has heeded this counsel. I hope that your foundations are already firm, and that you are doing everything you can to draw near unto the Lord: to shut worldly influences out of your lives; to take the Holy Spirit for your guide; to cling to Eternal Truth.

This issue of Desert Saints Magazine looks at forgiveness, family traditions, teaching children, honoring our new prophet and other great lessons. I pray that the Lord will help you to understand what is most important for your family today, and each day.

As a good friend said to me today during a discussion of the day’s news, “nothing has changed for me.” She and her husband have made righteousness a habit, buying food storage each month, being careful with their finances, being diligent in their prayers and scripture study. So as the world grows more turbulent, their family has no need to panic.

Their good habits have slowly and steadily placed their family on firm spiritual and temporal footing. Their eyes are on the prophet and because they have made it a continual practice to keep prophetic counsel, they have no fear.

I pray for these blessings for you. If you do not have them, repent now and put your family on firmer ground. As President Eyring said in his February 2008 Ensign article, our Father and Savior love us so much because we have been “purchased with a price we cannot fathom.”
Seek the Lord, with full purpose of heart, then, as President Hinckley often said, roll up your sleeves and get to work. These times will only get more “interesting.”

All the best,
