Colleen Haycock of Las Vegas and Theresa Huston of North Las Vegas have been honored by American Mothers of Nevada as exemplary examples of motherhood. Colleen Haycock was chosen as Nevada’s 2008 Mother of the Year, while Theresa Huston was selected as Nevada’s 2008 Young Mother.

Colleen Haycock

Now a mother of three, a grandmother of seventeen and a great-grandmother of twelve, Colleen has been guiding and strengthening her family and community in the Las Vegas Valley for over five decades. She has spent her mothering time being “at the crossroads” for her children, spending time with them in educational, sports, music and dance activities.

Colleen is universally admired for being an accomplished cook, an avid gardener and a tireless promoter of educational activities in the community. She has been an active member, serving in many roles of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Mesquite Club, the PTA, Dixie State College Advisory Council and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

One of Colleen’s favorite activities is her trips. She takes each grandchild, and now each great-grandchild, on a trip when they are twelve, and again when they graduate from high school. Colleen says, “The greatest benefit to the community is to raise children who will in turn serve their communities.” Her tender care and great example to her children make Colleen Haycock a wonderful representative as 2008 Nevada Mother of the Year.

A young mother of two, with another on the way, and a stepmother of two, Theresa Huston fills her days with in-the-trenches mothering of her young family. Her favorite daily activities are dancing with her preschoolers, going to the park, and playing with the kids. “Life passes you by so fast,” Theresa says. “That’s why it’s important to stop and just watch what they do at any moment.”

Theresa is known in the community for her love of books, which has led her to take part in two book clubs simultaneously, in addition to reading with her husband and reading the books her older kids are studying in school. Theresa is also extremely organized and a great bookkeeper; which she has put to work for her family, her school’s PTA and the American Mothers of Nevada state board.

Theresa credits strong women around her with helping her become a good mother, and wants to pass along the help to other young mothers through the American Mothers organization. Her hard work and dedication to creating a strong home in a troubled world make Theresa Huston a noteworthy 2008 Nevada Young Mother.
