Daughters of Utah Pioneers Carry On

DUP3 808The Daughters of Utah Pioneers is starting their new year of activities, and would love to have you join them. The DUP is an international society, with over 20,000 members dedicated to preserving the memories of the Utah Pioneers. They do this through preserving landmarks, personal histories, marking historical places and events, and teaching others through educational outreach programs.

The State of Nevada has five companies—two of which are in Las Vegas: the Clark Nevada Desert Springs Company (located west of I-15) is comprised of 8 camps, and Clark Nevada Legacy Meadows Company (east of I-15) has 6 camps. These fourteen groups host monthly camp meetings starting in September and going through May. Some meetings are held during the day and others schedule their meetings in the evening so that all are accommodated. There are also activities during the year at the Las Vegas Mormon Fort.

The International Board in Salt Lake City sponsors many activities and projects. Each year it sponsors the publication of a hardbound book of the historical material which was used as lesson material in the camps for that year. They have also published many historical pamphlets, cookbooks, and a Pioneer Song Book—many of which can be purchased on their website.

Any woman over 18 years of age, of good character, and a lineal or legally adopted descendant of a pioneer may qualify for membership in the DUP. Others that do not have pioneer heritage may join a camp as an Associate. To become a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, you need to complete an application for membership showing your relationship to one Utah Pioneer who came (or died en route) to Utah during the period of July 22, 1847 to May 10, 1969.

In December 2002, the DUP placed a monument on the east side of their museum in Salt Lake City entitled “Ever Pressing Forward - Lest We Forget” showing a pioneer mother and son looking back on a small daughter’s grave as they press on the trail. This is a motto they would like every person with Utah pioneer heritage to remember in keeping alive the important legacy of the Utah pioneers.
