Most of us are aware that service entails some measure of sacrifice, however members of the North Las Vegas Stake Center Choir have discovered that serving their Stake and community is, indeed, part sacrifice–but a large part satisfaction.
This Choir was organized in August of 2006 at the request of Stake President Peter G. Shields. The choir’s members are from the North Las Vegas Stake, and there are usually 65 voices. They perform four concerts per year in addition to providing the music for Stake and Ward conferences. The four concerts are Spring (sacred), July (patriotic), Fall (Pops), and Christmas.
The choir’s director, Bruce Green, has conducted church and community choirs in the Las Vegas area since 1980. While the choir is not auditioned, they are recommended for participation and are called and set apart by a member of the stake presidency.
The North Las Vegas Stake Orchestra began a year later, in October of 2007, both as an accompaniment to the choir and as a stand-alone performing group. The 25 to 30 members of this group are drawn from the entire valley, a large percentage of which are professional musicians and/or music teachers.
The orchestra is auditioned and members are also called and set apart by a member of the stake presidency. Their director, Ray Brown, is an orchestra teacher in Clark County and is currently working on his doctorate in orchestra conducting at UNLV. In addition to the four concerts listed above, the orchestra also performs a classical concert each year in late January/early February.
The Fall Concert scheduled for Saturday, October 18 will include popular classical favorites such as the Carmen Suite and Hoedown, movie music from Pirates of the Caribbean and The Prince of Egypt, jazz, pop, musical theater and other selections.
There is no charge for the event which will be held at the North Las Vegas Stake Center on Sunday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m.
