It’s always good to start the new year on a bright note. So here are a few things to make you smile:

First, Desert Saints Magazine will have great new content for 2009. See my article on page 6 detailing what’s in store.

Second, Smith Shumway, whose Sister Beth Moore wrote a lovely tribute about him in our July 2008 issue, has rallied. During the summer, when Beth wrote, Smith was on his death bed. But somewhere between the Lord’s will and the many calls he received from the article, Smith bounced back.
Beth reports he is back swimming and attending the temple. He is cheerful and says “there still must be people for me to help.” God bless you, Smith.

Third is the silver lining in a dark cloud. As our world is changing rapidly, lives are changing, and so are hearts. While many people will harden their hearts due to their trials, I believe many will also find their way to the waters of baptism as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stands as an ensign to the nations; an ever more brilliant beacon of light and truth piercing the darkness.

These are truly exciting times in which to live.
