Ray Rawson has been appointed as a university regent for UNLV by Governor Jim Gibbons. He will be filling the last two years of a term vacated by another regent. Brother Rawson is excited to serve as the District 5 regent because it is almost the same area covered by the state senate seat he used to occupy. He is pleased with the “chance to finish up things I worked on before,” he says.
As a state senator, Rawson was in charge of 82% of the state budget, which covered health care, education and welfare. “We built education because it makes a mature community,” says Rawson. “We do face lots of issues at UNLV. We face budget cuts of 52%. That is significant. But as Latter-day Saints we know that the ‘glory of God is intelligence,’ so we want to do that better.”
