I Love to See the Temple, I’m Going there … Today.

General

Temple 10 sarah 1009By Ken Craig
For me, one of the greatest blessings of the temple is the promised personal revelation that comes with regular attendance. We have been counseled:

Come to the temples worthily and regularly so you may freely partake of the promised personal revelation that may bless your life with power, knowledge, light, beauty. – David B. Haight.

I promise you that, with increased attendance in the temples of our God, you shall receive increased personal revelation to bless your life. – President Ezra Taft Benson

I make you a promise that if you will go to the house of the Lord, you will be blessed, life will be better for you. – President Gordon B. Hinckley

Get off your duff and go to the temple. What’s wrong with you?- What I Tell Myself Sometimes

On occasion I have gone to the temple grappling with a problem, struggling with a decision, or wading through a trial. Sometimes I have gone just to find some spiritual peace and quiet from this noisy world. (Is it just me? This world is noisy, isn’t it? You’ve noticed it too, right? Okay, glad we agree.)

I’ve often received personal revelation when attending the temple. Frequently it is in the form of some small wave of insight, such as the feeling of “there is nowhere else you should be right this moment, but here in the temple;” or a warm reminder from the Lord “your family members are your greatest blessing during your walk through mortality.”

On one particular occasion, I received a very specific, promised revelation. A few years ago our stake focused on our Stake Temple Day. Counsel and encouragement was given to actively research genealogy, prepare family names for the temple, and make sacrifices of time and energy to be able to spend as much of that day as possible in the temple.

The stake presidency visited each ward in the stake the Sunday prior to that day, and I remember a counselor in the stake presidency making the promise to our ward that if we would sacrifice time to be in the temple that day, we would receive personal revelation – an answer to a prayer in our hearts. I was looking forward to that.

My favorite thing about being in the temple that day was seeing the faces of a multitude of friends from the ward and stake, and feeling that this was a little like heaven; bumping into people I loved and being excited to see them because I loved them and because they were someplace wonderful. It was also reassuring that none of them looked at me as if they were wondering, “What are you doing here?”

Our final work that day was sealing ordinances. Unplanned, my wife and I found ourselves sitting with our stake patriarch and his wife. There happened to be a moment of down time as we waited for a temple worker to get some paperwork.

I had received my patriarchal blessing when I was 17 years old, and since that time – over half my life – I had been wondering about a statement made in that blessing. I had wanted clarity on it over the years and studied and read and even asked leaders about it; but I had never received an answer. I felt prompted to ask the patriarch about it, and here I was with the opportunity.

I asked him; and he had a precise answer. It was clear. It rung true. And the Spirit bore witness to me of its accuracy. It was the personal revelation I had wanted for 17 years, and the personal revelation our stake presidency promised I would receive if I made time to be in the temple that day.

I was encouraged by that experience to make greater sacrifices of time and energy to be in the temple often. The blessings promised to those who regularly attend the temple are astounding. I am happy to claim those blessings the Lord is anxious to bestow.

Especially if it includes turning down the volume on the earthly noise.
