Recognizing National Constitution Day, September 17, 2009, American Heritage Academy hosted its annual Constitution night. This year’s event was again open to the public, providing a full house of over three hundred people.
As part of the learning process and this annual celebration, students develop a classroom constitution, which is signed by each of them on Constitution night. After studying the Constitution in depth, students are asked to follow a Constitutional form of government throughout the remainder of the school year. This code of conduct is encouraged in their classroom, community and individual lives. On this evening, the students rededicate themselves to honoring the founding principles of our nation and commit to becoming the best-educated citizens of our country.
The guest speaker for the evening was David Holland, an Assistant Professor of History at UNLV. He detailed the events leading up to the American Revolution and the heroic acts that ensued.
Dr. Holland provided rare insights into the Founding Fathers, their individual character, divine inspiration, and love of country. Stories of personal sacrifice helped underscore the mood of the evening. Dr. Holland stated, “The Founding Fathers deserve our consideration, respect, and heartfelt appreciation because they thought about each of us, and our posterity.” He concluded his remarks to a standing ovation.
American Heritage Academy (AHA) is a faith-based, LDS, private school. AHA teaches the provident nature of the American Constitution and our nation’s role in world history. Laurel Beckstead, Headmaster of American Heritage Academy, said, “Students of AHA are encouraged to seek a spiritual understanding of history, literature, science, mathematics and the arts. In addition, AHA teaches the core principles of Faith, Patriotism and Leadership.” She added that AHA students are taught to recognize these core principles in each subject.
She continued, “AHA is unique to education. Each day is started with the pledge of allegiance, a prayer and a commitment to use both mind and spirit in the process of learning. Never is this process more inspiring than when it is applied to the studies of the American Revolution and the founding of our nation.”
