Letter From The Editor

Every March, the women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remember and celebrate the founding of the Relief Society, which the Prophet Joseph Smith declared to be “the Lord’s organization for women.” President Spencer W. Kimball reminded sisters of the blessings of this organization, pronounced upon the Society by Joseph:

1. This society, a society of sisters, is organized “according to your natures. … You are now placed in a situation in which you can act according to those sympathies which God has planted in your bosoms.” (HC, 4:605.)

2. “If this Society listens to the counsel of the Almighty, through the heads of the Church, they shall have power to command queens in their midst.” (HC, 4:605.)

3. “If you live up to your privileges, the angels cannot be restrained from being your associates.” (HC, 4:605.)

4. “Knowledge and intelligence shall flow down from this time henceforth.” (HC, 4:607.)

5. “This Society shall rejoice.” (HC, 4:607.) (quoted in “Relief Society—Its Promise and Potential,” Ensign, Mar 1976, 2.)

Countless blessings have flowed to the women of the Church of Jesus Christ, and through them to their families, wards, stakes, neighborhoods, communities, and indeed the entire world, in the 168 years of Relief Society. The opportunities for this Society are even greater now. Women today have a mighty charge from the Lord:

“Sisters, now more than ever, we need women to step up and be strong. We need women who declare the truth with strength, faith, and boldness. We need women to set an example of righteousness. We need women to be ‘anxiously engaged in a good cause’ (D&C 58:27). We need to live so that our lives bear witness that we love our Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ and that we will do what They have asked us to do. We need to rescue ‘all that is finest down deep inside of [us]’ so that as daughters of God we can do our part to build the kingdom of God.” (Barbara Thompson, “Now Let
Us Rejoice,” Ensign, Nov. 2008, 115, 116.)

May we ever do our best to sustain this noble organization by service in it or support of it.

All the best,
