On Saturday, April 17, 2010, priesthood leadership from nine Henderson and Las Vegas stakes met with Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder James B. Gibson, Area Seventy, and Elder David S. Baxter of the First Quorum of the Seventy for training. On Sunday, April 18, Elder Perry, Elder Baxter and Elder Gibson conducted special stake conferences in area stakes.
Elder Gibson spoke at the Black Mountain Stake Meeting. He found a receptive crowd, since he was once a member of the stake, and was recently the mayor of Henderson. Elder Gibson explained that the meeting was under the direction of Elder Perry, and that he was actually presiding at the meeting.
Elder Gibson stressed that members need to “reflect the Savior’s light” in their lives. He told a poignant story from his sixth-grade class on how he first learned that lesson. His class was asked to come together to tutor a new girl who struggled with schoolwork and had no friends. They had a great semester, and came together as a class, and then their new friend was killed with her whole family in a plane crash.
Elder Gibson expressed gratitude for the lessons learned from that experience; that kindness matters, that you never know when the circumstances of life will change; that reflecting the light of the Savior to others may make all the difference-to you as well as to them.
After the counsel received at the priesthood leadership training meeting, Black Mountain Stake President Steven Jones urged members to set their homes in order, after the pattern set forth in D&C 88: 119.
