Have you ever thought about the way you react to a situation can affect others around you? Have you thought about this: “Your attitude determines your altitude?”
When my oldest daughter Emma was in the 7th grade, she had a science packet to complete for homework. She worked diligently on it for the entire week. One night after coming home from mutual she found her baby sister Sophia in the middle of the floor shredding and eating her homework. She screamed as soon as she realized her hard work was half eaten and half drenched in Sophia’s slobber. Knowing my daughter’s unique personality to over dramatize the situation, I had to be quick on my feet.
As Emma was throwing a major fit- crying, stomping and yelling at everyone around her, I gathered up the remaining pieces of the mutilated paper. Emma began to calm down. I asked her to go and get two large “ziplock” bags and a “Sharpe”. She brought them to me. I put all the pieces of homework in one bag and put a rolled up (unused) diaper in the other bag. I then wrote, “1/4 of the homework” on the shredded papers, and wrote “3/4 of the homework” on the rolled up diaper. I then penned a note to her teacher stating, “Sorry for the mishap. Emma’s baby sister ate her homework. We gathered all we could find off the living room floor (1/4)….. here is the other portion (3/4) we found in her sister’s diaper.”
We all had a good laugh and the situation was under control. Emma then brought it to her teacher.
I know the situation was devastating to my daughter at that time. In the back of my mind I kept telling myself to keep my cool. If I had reacted by yelling back at her and not used humor to defuse the situation, we would not have been able to laugh at the day “my sister ate my homework.”
How we react to a situation can greatly affect others around us. Our attitude will not only affect our personal altitude, but also the altitude of others around us. In this situation having an attitude of humor has affected how our children react to their own personal crisis. Just remember, we all have the choice in every situation to throw gas on it and make it bigger and more magnified, or we can throw water on it and put it out. So choose every day and every situation to be your best self!
