Dear Readers,
The month of July has always been special to me. Growing up in a small town in Utah that celebrated our “town days” over the 24th complete with a parade, rodeo and fireworks was part of it…. and was also my grandma Vada’s birthday. I was nine years old by the time I realized the celebration wasn’t just for her. She was an amazing woman. She told us we came from “strong pioneer stock.” I have tried to instill a small part of that in my children. When they were younger and I would start in about the pioneers, I would hear a chorus of “enough with the pioneers.” I now know in some way we ALL come from “strong pioneer stock.”
President Monson said, in July 2011 – Liahona, about Pioneer life: “The crude homes were described in these terms by one who was there as a small boy. There was no window of any kind whatever in our house. Neither was there a door. My mother hung an old quilt that served as a door that first winter. This was our bedroom, our parlor, our sitting room, our kitchen, our sleeping room, everything in this room of about 12 by 16 feet. How in the world we all got along in it I do not know. I recollect that my dear old mother stated that no queen who ever entered her palace was ever more happy or proud of shelter and the blessings of the Lord than she was when she entered that completed dugout. We honor those who endured incredible hardships. We praise their names and reflect on their sacrifices.”
– Maybe we should think about the pioneers a little more than one month of the year. Then you too will hear “enough with the pioneers.”
