Jul 2009 Issue

Alden Stewart, recently honored as a Distinguished Nevadan, passed away June 7, 2009. Alden’s devotion to God, his wife and children were the mark of his character. Alden loved his Father in Heaven and was always active in the serving the church. He witnessed many marvels and had numerous significant accomplishments in his 92 years, but would readily say his family is his proudest legacy. He is survived by his precious wife, Carma; six children; 27 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren, to date. Each of whom can boast of having an intimate and close relationship with him and would say he has been the ultimate example of integrity, generosity and a life well-lived. Arrangements were handled by Palm Mortuary. Interment at the cemetery in Alamo.

Jul 2009 Issue

Mark Albright, recently released as President of the Redrock Stake, has been called to preside over the Washington DC South Mission of the Church. He and his wife Karyn report to the MTC June 24. The mission has approximately 165 missionaries from various parts of the world, and includes a Spanish zone and several missionaries serving from Mongolia. Many of the current converts are immigrants from Africa and South America.

Apr 2009 Issue

Joseph Edward Thiriot, 102, died March 22, 2009, at his home in Las Vegas. He was born in Provo, Utah, Aug. 20, 1906, to the late George William and Alvira Rhoana Henrie Thiriot. He was 12 when his family moved to Pahranagat Valley and he lived in Nevada 90 years. Graduated with a BA from BYU and MA from Northwestern University. He taught at Lincoln County High School, in Nevada for seven years, then in 1940, came to teach at Las Vegas High School.

Recently, the North Las Vegas Township Justice of the Peace was recognized by Brigham Young University as the 2008 Law School Honored Alumnus. This distinction goes to a recipient that demonstrates a life of service to profession, community, family and ideals. Nearly 1,000 people attended the award ceremony, including several general authorities.

It is bestowed upon prominent individuals who have made significant achievements that have contributed to the cultural, scientific or social advancement of Nevada. The recipients will be honored at commencements in Reno and Las Vegas in May.

Mar 2009 Issue

Jon Bunker has been called as president of the Santa Rosa, California Spanish-speaking mission by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Santa Rosa mission extends from the Pacific Ocean on the west almost to Sacramento on the east, and goes from Santa Rosa in the south, north to the Oregon border. There are about 180 missionaries. The Bunkers report to the MTC in Provo at the end of June for a three-day seminar, then report to their mission by July 1.

Ray Rawson has been appointed as a university regent for UNLV by Governor Jim Gibbons. He will be filling the last two years of a term vacated by another regent. Brother Rawson is excited to serve as the District 5 regent because it is almost the same area covered by the state senate seat he used to occupy. He is pleased with the “chance to finish up things I worked on before,” he says.

Mar 2009 Issue

Dr. William F. Harvey has been appointed to the Nevada State Board of Optometry by Governor Jim Gibbons. Dr. Harvey will serve for a three-year term. The Nevada State Board of Optometry is “the public’s protection for the optometry field,” says Dr. Harvey. They control the licensing of optometrists in the state, issue new licenses, discipline, revoke licenses and suggest changes in laws related to their field. The board consists of three optometrists, and attorney and an executive director.
