In war-stricken Sierra Leone, Mariama Kallon witnessed her family’s cruel murder as she barely escaped a tortuous death by the hand of savage rebels. As a refugee in her own country, Kallon found solace with a Latter-day Saint family who offered her hope in God and courage to carry on. Inspired by the teachings of the restored gospel, she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kallon desired to show her gratitude to the Lord by serving a mission for her church. With barely a single change of clothes and a Church-sent hygiene kit as her only worldly possessions, she arrived in the United States and began a full-time mission on Temple Square.
