Beginning with the brave souls who crossed the plains and settled in the American West, to modern pioneers who lead out in faith across the globe, their tales inspire faith. We admire pioneers, and are moved by their stories because they are steadfast. Perhaps many begin their journey in the flush of excitement, when things are easy: the Spirit has borne a powerful witness of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, or the thrill of gathering to Zion with the saints looms large. The experience is probably not so different from young men going off to war, convinced it will be a sightseeing tour.

She had purchased these in order to attend church services while on vacation. “I really want to start going to church,” she told to me. “I feel something very special about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If I ever join any church, it will be the Mormon Church.”

One of my favorite comic strip characters is Calvin, a five-year-old boy who has a pet tiger named Hobbes. Whenever Calvin has a trial in his life, or has to undertake a challenging project, his father tells him it will ‘build character.’ His father is eager for his son to build his character. By the end of the day, however, the father just wants his son to have a bath and get to bed. Can anyone else relate?
