Three years ago my oldest son decided he’d had enough of living at home, so within a week of turning eighteen, he was out the door, on his way to what he thought would be a great life with all the freedom he imagined would come his way. What he discovered was that freedom isn’t free, being on your own often means being alone, and it costs a whole lot more to support yourself than he ever imagined.

As an addiction counselor, a person of recovery myself and the author of a new book called The Waterfall Concept, my focus has been on helping Latter-day Saints who find themselves slaves to addictions and compulsive behavior. My priority has been on helping others to break the cycle of addiction and to have the tools to truly heal and recover.

Aug 2009 Issue

The Lord loves a good agricultural image. During His earthly ministry, he used them often in teaching opportunities. He especially loves teaching about missionary work in this way. “For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul” (D&C 4: 4).
But one thing often overlooked in these images is the amount of time it takes to bring forth the work. Think of the mustard seed, which needs many years to grow before birds can nest in mature branches (see Luke 13). The process is slow.
